Ecuador, Andes
One of the best ways to visit Ingapirca, the most important Inca ruins in Ecuador, is by bicycle. A private guide will take you through impressive landscapes, rural areas and its indigenous-Cañari culture, before arriving at the famous ruins, where you can take a guided tour.
Located on top of a hill, with a beautiful view of the surroundings, Ingapirca is the most important Inca-Cañari complex in Ecuador. It was built during the Inca expansion into Ecuador at the end of the 15th century, on a site that had been occupied by the Cañari people for 500 years. The original Cañari structures were mostly destroyed and replaced by Incas, their settlement was probably used as a fortress and place of worship on the Inca trail between Cusco and Quito. Today, the Temple of the Sun is the only structure that remains almost intact. The temple features stone walls built in the way of the Inca, using huge chiseled blocks that fit together perfectly without the use of mortar.
On this tour, we will travel by bus to the north, through the Pan-American highway, until we reach Ingapirca. After an hour we will arrive at Molobog where you will have your bike to ride the rest of the way (35 km - approx. 3 hours) to Ingapirca, along a dirt road, passing through various indigenous villages and a beautiful landscape of fields corn and potato. The tour will conclude with a visit to the Ingapirca ruins, where a guide will talk to you about Inca history, culture and traditions, before returning to Cuenca.
